Ken was God's instrument to bring Emmanuel Mission to Brazil.
The son of missionaries who worked for over 50 years in Bolivia, Ken was also linked to God's work there. In 1967 he was sent to work in Araçatuba, São Paulo, and served several churches in the region.
As a friend of George Middleton--the founder of Emmanuel Mission in 1979--Ken had heard of some young people in Belo Horizonte with a call to integrated missions work. In December of that year he shared with a small group in Belo Horizonte the philosophy of Emmanuel Mission: to provide ministry in spiritual outreach, economic development, disaster relief and rehabilitation.
In May of 1980, with his support, Fred Silva began field trials to establish the first team in Mission Emanuel Passabém. Ken continued to support the work, visiting teams, discussing strategies including the establishment of the Mission Emmanuel as a Brazilian mission agency.
It was he who, in 1999, opened and conducted the first meeting of the Mission Emmanuel of Brazil. He was also the president of the International Council of Emmanuel Relief and Rehabilitation International for several years.
In 2007 he and his wife had to return to the United States because of Ruth's health. In April of 2009, Ken visited Brazil for the last time, and I had the privilege of spending time with him again. Last Saturday it pleased God to take him home.
We are saddened by his departure, but we have the comfort and joy in knowing that he is with his Lord whom he served all his life.
The example of humility and service from someone who spent his life to bless so many others needs to be shared. His ministry in Bolivia, in Sao Paulo, the Amazon and here in Ontario is an example to us all.
Given everything Ken has left us, Emmanuel Mission can work with even greater effectiveness in the expansion of the Kingdom of God.
